Education & Outreach Vision

Education hub pipeline: K-12 outreach, undergraduate research, and graduate training

The lab’s long-term education goal is to build a sustainable, learning-based control and autonomy education hub at Auburn University, Alabama (AL) — one that connects K-12 outreach, undergraduate research, modernized coursework, and graduate training so each level reinforces the others. Graduate students mentor undergraduate researchers, undergraduates are recruited into graduate research, and both help K-12 outreach. The result is a self-reinforcing pipeline that broadens participation in modern autonomy, control, and robotics across Alabama.

K-12 Outreach Experience

The lab has led hands-on robotics and AI outreach for K-12 students in rural Alabama, where students rarely encounter robotics or AI.

VEX GO camp (2024) — a one-week robotics camp for rural grades 6-8 in AL, run in Auburn Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (SCORE), with an “Introduction to Robotics and Control” lecture and hands-on guidance. This gave rural AL middle-schoolers — many encountering programmable robots for the first time — direct, hands-on exposure to robotics and control concepts.

VEX GO robotics camp, grades 6-8

RoboLab camp (2025) — a K-5 lab tour and an ML-based robotics lecture (provided by our lab member), run by Auburn Engineering K-12 Outreach. This introduced young students to AI and robotics through a real research lab, while giving a lab member early experience mentoring and communicating science to the public.
